Design template for a game mentor workshop

We absolutely love our mentors. We also love the fact that the Finnish game industry has a thriving culture of mentorship. But too often there is no support for the mentors available. This is why we decided to craft and publish a design for a workshop to support interaction and peer learning between game industry mentors.

Mentoring doesn’t require any specific degree or level of education. There’s no need to push it back until you have a decade of experience in the industry. A junior can already be a valuable mentor for a student or a peer.

But mentoring is a skill, too. It’s a skill that’s largely about interaction, communication, and empathy between human beings. And like any soft skill, it is a path of continuous learning and development. No matter how good you are, you can become better.

On top of this, many mentors also long for peer support and discussions with other mentors. Bringing mentors together and giving them a chance to connect has value in itself.

The design template

Based on research and two workshop test drives, theĀ Baltic Sea Game Incubation project crafted a design template for an online workshop for game industry mentors. Our goal was to design a concept that would support genuine interaction and peer learning between the participants of the workshop. However, you can tailor it to fit your needs.

We published this design published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, so that anyone willing to support mentoring in games or other industries can freely use it and develop it further. We hope you find it useful!

You can find the design document pdf-file here. The full development process is described in this whitepaper.
